Last month, I had a blast in New Orleans with my fellow photographer Meghan Doll. We were there for Imaging USA 2012. I didn’t take any photos in the actual conference, but you’ll see I snapped a few while we were exploring and having some fun. Enjoy!

LOOK AT THESE OAK TREES! Aren’t they simply AMAZING!? The following shots are taken from the Oak Alley Plantation. So beautiful.

the oak trees have these crazy root systems that grow above ground. I think the reason is because the soil level is too shallow to allow the roots to grow deeply under ground.

Another portrait of the week. Agnes and I had a great time using the Walker Art Center grounds for our photo backgrounds. I’m a fan of the simple geometric shapes that help with the idea of framing within a frame. Tell me what you think. Any feedback on the photos is much appreciated. I hope you enjoy!

Minneapolis Senior Photos: Ryan

Downtown Minneapolis, the Stone Arch Bridge, the Guthrie Theatre, and a hilarious senior. These are all ingredients for a very enjoyable shoot. And so it was. Ryan was a great guy to work with because it didn’t feel like work at all. Really, it just felt like we were hanging out for the night and happen to be taking some photos while we were at it. It was fun to chat about the whole up-and-coming dub-step movement happening in the music scene. Walker was with us as well helping me with my gear as we went from one location to the next. Overall, I’d say it was a very successful shoot as we all had a great time. Let me know what you think of the photos!

Portrait of the week: Jared & Terrance

Driving in and out of the city on my daily route to and from work is a bitter sweet experience. Minneapolis is chalk full of such wonderful textures, alley ways, colors, buildings, streaming sunlight and a bunch of other cliché-photo terms. Cliché though it all is, I am drawn to it all. The problem is, I can’t do anything about it since I obviously need to get to work; or obviously I need to get home so I can relax and eat dinner. Friday after work, however, I listened to my instinct, pulled over, put money in a meter, geared up, and started shooting. It’s difficult to fully describe the sensation of freedom I felt as I allowed my eyes to wonder around and “grab” shots of what I saw. I’ve noticed that ever since becoming a photographer, I get this creative itch that I can’t scratch because of time constraints or fatigue or what have you. This time (he he he he) I was free to roam!

It didn’t take long before a couple of guys noticed me geeking out. So they starting posing and laughing as they pretended for a second that they were the stars of the show. I looked up from behind my camera and thought, “Why not?” So I stood up and asked if they wanted their portrait made. Twenty minutes later, I had some killer photos of complete strangers. Allow me to introduce you to two new friends of mine: Jared and Terrance. Enjoy.

Me: “Alright, where should we take your shot… let’s see…” Without a word, Terrance walks directly to the Navigator. I say,”Oh alright! Is this yours?” Without skipping a beat he says, “Nah, but it’s a sweet prop! Ha!”

Portrait of the Week: David

David was a great model to have. It was wonderful to work with a guy who has a great sense of style but doesn’t take himself too seriously. His friend Djitu joined him for the shoot. She said that she’d be down to do a shoot as well in a couple weeks. Should be fun. In the mean time, enjoy the shots we got and tell me your thoughts.

Minneapolis Couples Photography: Staci + Brent

Here is a fun pair. Northeast Minneapolis was the perfect location to take Staci and Brent for some fun couples-photos. Both of them are fun and quirky each in their own way. I know Staci to be the artsy type, while Brent is a bit more type-A–but still has a quick wit about him. You can show Staci some support by visiting her website here. The three of us had a great time exploring the Northrup King building located in the Arts-district in Northeast Minneapolis. Overall, it was an ideal shoot. The lighting was perfect, while Staci and Brent were really great at improvising in front of the lens. This is normally not very easy for people to do, but they were so natural in how they interacted with each other, I was able to just have fun with the camera. Let me know what you think! The warehouse district in Minneapolis never fails as a great place for senior photos. Walker and I had a great time chatting and snapping a few photos around 1st ave and 1st street.
